Clare Slagel Named to Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large Team

Clare Slagel, a 2012 graduate of Dubuque Hempstead High School, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large Team as a first team selection.

The 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One became the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA’s Academic All-America teams programs in 2011.

Sports that comprise the women’s at-large team include bowling, crew, fencing, golf, gymnastics, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, and water polo.

Slagel was selected from a pool of first-team all-district honorees from eight regions. This year’s Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women’s At-Large Team consists of 15 first-team, 15 second-team and 15 third-team honorees, for a total of 45 student-athletes chosen for this outstanding honor.

During the 2014 campaign, Slagle etched her name in Luther history, becoming the first national swimming champion in school history. At the 2014 NCAA III National Swimming & Diving Championships she captured the national title in the 200 backstroke. She also placed third in the 100 backstroke and swam the anchor leg of Luther’s 200 Medley Relay that earned All-American honors placing seventh.  Combined with her All-American honors in both the 100 and 200 backstroke last year, she is already a five-time All-American.

Slagle is an Biology major who has a grade point average of 3.85. She is the daughter of Daniel and Karen Slagel of Dubuque, Iowa.
