Clare Slagel became the first swimmer in Luther history to claim an NCAA III national championship.
Slagel set a new school record of 1:58.38 while capturing the national championship in the 200 backstroke at tonight's fourth and final night of the national finale. Slagel finished just ahead of Taylor Kitayama of Johns Hopkins who touched the wall at 1:58.74. Slagel qualified for tonight's finals with the fastest time in the prelims clocked at 1:58.74.
Her national title was her third All-American honor of these championships. She also earned All-American honors swimming the first leg of Luther's seventh place 200 medley relay and placed fourth in the 100 backstroke, bringing her career total of All-American honors to five. Last year, Slagel placed fourth in the 100 backstroke and third in the 200 backstroke.
