Luther entered the final Iowa Conference double header of the regular season needing one win to claim the outright league title. The Norse posted two wins this afternoon defeating the Storm of Simpson College 11-3 (6) and 7-4.
Former Luther Head Coach and NFCA Hall of Famer Betty Hoff threw out the ceremonial first pitch, just a couple hours after the field was officially named the Betty A. Hoff field.
In game one, Simpson jumped out to a 3-2 lead after three innings, but Luther put four runs on the board in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth, to secure the six inning victory.
The Norse pounded out 15 hits that included a three-run home run by Anna Strien and a solo shot by Bailey Victoria. Victoria was 4-for-4 with three RBI. Bailey Hocker was also perfect at the plate going 4-for-4 and scoring twice. Sara Nelson also had a multiple hit game with a 3-for-4 performance and two RBI.
Samantha Bratland went the distance in the circle. Bratland allowed three runs on six hits and struck out three. She is now 19-2 with an ERA of 1.27.
In the nightcap, the Norse scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, to snap a 4-4 tie. The Storm scored one run in the first and three in the third to level the score, after Luther had jumped out to a 4-1 lead, scoring three in the first and one in the second.
Ashley Burrows, Strien, and Blake Banowetz all drove in two runs. Burrows was 2-for-3 and scored twice from the lead-off slot. Hocker continued her perfect day going 3-for-3 and scoring once. Nelson also capped off her afternoon 2-for-4 at the plate and driving in one run in the three-run sixth.
Amanda Witzlib was credited with the win. Witzlib took over midway through the third frame and retired the first 11 batters she faced, eight by strike out. The win was her first of the season.
The league title is the third in a row for Luther and 10th in school history. The Norse are now 37-3 and will host the Iowa Conference Tournament May 5-6.
