Two nationally ranked teams squared off in Cedar Rapids this afternoon. The Coe College Kohawks entered today's Iowa Conference twin bill ranked No. 7 in the NCAA III and Luther was ranked No. 5.
In game one, Luther scored two runs on three hits in the top of the third. Sammie Harris led off with a single to center field, that was followed with a single by Ashley Burrows and a walk by Anna Strien two batters later that loaded the bases. Bailey Victoria singled through the left side that scored Harris. Burrows scored on the next at-bat when Blake Banowetz reached on a fielder's choice.
The Kohawks answered in the bottom half of the frame with two runs on one hit, and the score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth, when Madi Miller drove in Haley Jones with a sacrifice fly to right field that led to the 3-2 victory.
Maliah Fligg (11-1) won the pitchers dual allowing two runs on six hits. She walked three and struck out five.
Samantha Bratland (11-2) went the distance in the circle for the Norse. Bratland allowed three runs on five hits, walked five and struck out four.
In the nightcap, Luther defeated Coe 5-3 to secure a split. The Norse scored twice in the second and three times in the seventh. Coe leveled the score with two runs in the fifth and produced one run in the seventh despite loading the bases.
Anna Strien, Megan Bonnett and Sammie Harris each drove in one run. Harris finished the game going 3-for-3. Ashley Burrows also produced multiple hits going 2-for-3 and finished the twin bill 4-for-6 at the plate.
Annie Versnik picked up her 12th win of the year. Versnik allowed three runs on three hits and walked four in six innings of work. Bratland was credited with the save, allowing just one hit, walked one and struck out one.
The split gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 3-1, 23-3 overall. Coe is now 4-2 in the IIAC, 21-4 overall.
Luther will host UW-River Falls tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. This is the final non-conference double header of the year.
