The Norse advanced to the third round of the championship bracket thanks to a 5-4 victory over UW-Whitewater this afternoon. The Norse scored two runs in the second and third innings and added what proved to be an important insurance run in the third.The Warhawks scored once in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Morgan Franklin, who was 2-for-3, was one of four Norse that produced multiple hits. Franklin drove in two runs, one of which was a solo home run to left field to start the second frame. Alise Miller, Miranda McCay and Kayla Hatting all tallied two hits as well.
Becca Girvan (20-5) went the distance in the circle. Girvan allowed four runs on six hits, walked three and struck out 11.
The victory gives Luther an overall record of 30-9 marking the seventh consecutive season the Norse have posted 30 or more wins.
On the other side of the winners bracket, the winner of the North Central (IL) versus Illinois Wesleyan game will face Luther at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. A victory by either team of this game will be one victory away from claiming the regional championship and a trip to the NCAA III Championship in Eau Claire, Wis., May 17-21.
