Nationally ranked No. 9 Luther moved into a four-way tie for first place in the Iowa Conference after sweeping Buena Vista University 2-0, 10-0 (6) this afternoon in Decorah. The Norse pounded out 18 hits, while the pitching staff held the Beavers to five hits during the twinbill.
In game one, Becca Girvan became Luther's all-time leader is strikeouts, while throwing a two-hit shutout. Girvan struck out 11 of the 23 batters she faced giving her a career total of 490. Girvan moved past All-American Kim Lambert '10 who ended her career with 489.The win gives Girvan a record of 10-2.
Carli Radil and Miranda McCay drove in the Norse runs. Radil hit a solo shot over the left field fence in the third, while McCay drove in what proved to be the game winner with a single in the second. Both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
In the nightcap, Luther scored two in the first, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the sixth en route to the six inning victory. Kelsey Weindruch ended the game with a three-run home run to left. Weindruch, who was 2-for-4, also drove in three runs in the first with a triple to right-center field. Elisa Smith and McCay also tallied multiple hits.
Erica Manske (6-0) remained undefeated in the circle. Manske threw a three-hit shutout, striking out six batters and walking one.
The two victories runs Luther's string of consecutive victories to five. The Norse are now 18-4 overall. Buena Vista fell to 2-4 in league play, 11-13 overall.
The Norse will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they will host the Spartans of University of Dubuque at 2:00 p.m.
