Nationally ranked No. 9 Luther increased its wins streak to seven after sweeping University of Dubuque 10-7, 9-1 (5) this afternoon. The Norse, have dominated this series and have now won 23 consecutive games over the Spartans dating back to 2001. More importantly, the two victories keeps the Norse tied atop the Iowa Conference standings with No. 15 Coe and No. 17 Central at 7-1.
In game one, the Norse won a slug fest, as the two teams combined for 22 hits and 17 runs. The Norse scored three in the first, four in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Morgan Franklin, Kelsey Weindruch and Katie Wieland led the Norse attack driving in seven runs. Franklin and Weindruch were credited with two each, while Wieland drove in three. All three of Wieland's RBIs came on home runs in back to back innings. She hit a two-run home run to left field in the third and a solo shot to left in the fourth. Franklin also hit a solo shot to left in the fourth.
Becca Girvan (11-2) went the distance in the circle. Girvan allowed seven runs on nine hits, walked six and struck out seven.
The Norse exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth en route to the victory. Franklin hit a two-run home run in the first and Carli Radil hit a solo shot in the third. Shari Huber and Miranda McCay both drove in two runs in the fifth.
Erica Manske (7-0) allowed one run on three hits, walked two and struck out two.
The Norse will host UW-La Crosse tomorrow for a non-conference double header that will begin at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be video streamed.
