No. 9 Luther traveled to No. 15 Coe for and Iowa Conference showdown in Cedar Rapids this afternoon. This was the conference opener for the Norse. The two teams split the series with Coe winning game one 3-2 and Luther winning the nightcap 8-1.

In game one, Coe did all of its damage with the long ball. Abby Flannagan hit a two-run home run to left field in the first and Callie Morningstar hit a solo shot in the fifth.

Luther scored a run in the fifth and one in the top of the seventh. Shari Huber and Elisa Smith were both credited with an RBI. Carli Randil was 2-for-4 and Morgan Franklin was 2-for-3.

Becca Girvan struck out eight batters and allowed two hits in six innings of work.

Box Score

In game two, Luther score eight runs on 10 hits. The Norse scored a run in the second, five in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Miranda McCay had a huge game going 3-for-4 and driving in six runs. McCay drove in a run with a double in the second, and one in the seventh with a single. Sandwiched in the middle was her first career home run that was a grand slam to left field.

Becca Girvan improved to 8-2 allowing one run on six hits. She walked four and struck out three.

Box Score

The split gives Luther a record of 1-1 in the IIAC, 14-4 overall. Coe is now 3-1 in league play, 21-3 overall.

Luther returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it will host Wartburg College at 3:30 p.m.
