Three Luther College softball players were named to the 2012 NFCA Division III All-American Team. The announcement was made at the NCAA III Softball Championship Finals Banquet held Thursday, May 17, in Salem, Va.
First-team honors were presented to sophomore pitcher Becca Girvan (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo); Second-team honors were presented to senior catcher Kelsey Kittleson (St. Ansgar, Iowa/St. Ansgar); and third-team honors were presented to junior outfielder Shari Huber (Eldridge, Iowa/North Scott).
The NFCA annually announces the first, second and third All-America teams, that have 15 student-athletes on each team. The student-athletes that received this honor, were selected from eight regions and were all first-team all-region honorees.
Girvan, the Iowa Conference Pitcher of the Year and Pella Regional Most Outstanding Player, ranks third in the country with a Luther single season record 29 wins. She also set the Luther’s single season strike out record with 249 en route to an ERA of 1.02.
Kittleson enters the NCAA III National Championship batting .379 with a team best 49 RBI and 10 home runs. Defensively, she has been credited with 317 putouts, 32 assists and five errors for a fielding percentage of .986.
Huber leads all Luther starters with a batting average of .405 from her lead-off position. She also leads the team with 52 runs scored, one shy of tying the single season record set by Erin Michael in 2007. Defensively, she has posted a fielding percentage of .982 commiting one error in 56 chances.
With this announcement last night, Luther softball players have earned 21 All-America honors, 11 under the direction of Head Coach Renae Hartl.
Luther (40-7) is making its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA III Championship Finals and sixth overall in school history. The Norse will begin play on Friday, May 18 vs. Pacific Lutheran University at 1:30 p.m. ET in Salem, Va.
