Luther College has been recognized as a 2016-17 Easton/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Academic Team. Luther was one of 125 teams in Division III that was recognized. The Norse were ranked No. 58 with a team grade-point-average of 3.422.
Eight members of the 2017 Luther College softball team were named Easton/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar Athletes.
To achieve this honor, a student-athlete must have obtained a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above on a 4.0 scale, at the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year.
The 2017 NFCA Scholar Athletes and the class they were in during the 2017 season were seniors Sarah Nelson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North), and Amanda Witzlib (Germantown, Wis.); juniors Ashley Burrows (Bondurant, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrar) and Anna Strien (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Waterloo Columbus); sophomores Blake Banowetz (Bellevue, Iowa/Marquette Catholic), Jordan Demmin (Algoma, Wis./Algoma), and Bailey Hocker (Davenport, Iowa/Bettendorf); and freshman Lilly Johnson (Minnetrista, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret).
Luther wrapped up the 2017 schedule with an overall record of 41-5 and one win away from qualifying for the NCAA III Softball Championship. The Norse won their third consecutive Iowa Conference regular season championship and had seven players named to the all-conference team. Six players were also named all-Midwest Region and three were named NFCA All-Americans.
In the final national statistics, Luther was ranked fourth in the NCAA III in batting average (.366), sixth for slugging percentage (.527), seventh for both ERA (1.39) and runs per game (7.2) and eighth for fielding percentage (.974).
The Norse are coached by Renae Hartl who has tallied a record of 514-171 in 16 seasons.
