It was announced today that the Luther College softball team will be the No.1 seed at the four-team Pella Regional of the NCAA III Softball Championship, to be held at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field May 9-11.
Under the new tournament format, there are 16 regional sites--14 four-team regionals and two regionals with three teams. The 16 regional champs then meet in two-team super regionals May 16-17 under a best two-of-three format. The eight super regional winners advance to the NCAA finals May 22-27 in Tyler, Texas.
Luther will be making its 15th appearance in the national tournament, its sixth consecutive and seventh in the last eight years.
Luther earned the Iowa Conference automatic berth to the national tournament after capturing the 2014 IIAC Softball Tournament title held May 2-4, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Norse defeated Buena Vista University 5-4 (8) in the quarterfinals; defeated top seed of the tournament and and regular season champions Coe College 2-0 (8) in the semifinals; and then claimed the tournament title defeating Coe College 15-10 in the championship game.
Luther (30-6) will meet Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) (30-15) in the double elimination regional at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9. Host Central (30-10) will take on North Central (Ill.) (29-11) at 3:30 p.m.
The Central College Sports Information Department will video stream all of the regional games.
The Norse are coached by Renae Hartl who has compiled a career record of 393-153 and is in the midst of her 13th season.
