To achieve this honor, a student-athlete must have obtained a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above on a 4.0 scale, at the conclusion of the 2012-13 academic year.
The 2013 NFCA Scholar Athletes and the class they were in last season are seniors Shari Huber (Eldrige, Iowa) and Elisa Smith (Mounds View, Minn.); juniors Kelsey Bies (Maple Grove, Minn.), Becca Girvan (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Kayla Hatting (LeMars, Iowa); sophomores Alise Miller (Iowa City, Iowa) and Kelsey Rose (Bettendorf, Iowa); and freshman Paige Lobdell (Sterling, Ill.) and Lindsey Uphoff (Prior Lake, Minn.).
During her 12 years as head coach, Renae Hartl's teams have excelled both in the classroom and on the softball field. The Norse have posted seven straight seasons with 30-plus wins including three with 40-plus victories. The Norse have made four consecutive appearances in the NCAA III Championship Finals finishing fifth in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and seventh in 2011. Fifty-one all-conference, 46 NFCA Midwest Region and 13 All-America honors have been earned during this time span.
This past season marked the second consecutive year that nine members of the team earned NFCA All-Scholar honors. Three of the past four years a member of the softball team has earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. In 2011 and 2012, Norse All-American catcher Kelsey Kittleson received the NCAA Elite 89 Award, presented to the player with the highest cummulative grade-point-average at the NCAA III National Championship Finals. Kittleson was also a top-nine finalist for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
