The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) has announced that Becca Girvan was named IIAC Female Athlete of the Week, and that Miranda McCay was named the Position Player of the Week, for the week ending Sunday, April 14, 2013.
Girvan, a junior, threw 12 innings of shutout ball and picked up a pair of wins as the No. 9 Norse swept Wartburg and Buena Vista. In a 6-0 win over the Knights on April 8, she scattered three hits, walked two and struck out eight in five innings of work. Girvan twirled a complete-game shutout in a 2-0 win over Buena Vista on April 14, scattering two hits, walking one and striking out 11. With the 11 strikeouts against the Beavers, Girvan set the Luther career record for strikeouts and has 497 for her career through April 15.
McCay, a freshman outfielder, hit .750 with nine hits in 12 at-bats as the Norse swept doubleheaders against Wartburg and Buena Vista. Against Wartburg, she was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI in game one, then added two hits - including a home run - scored twice and drove in four in the nightcap. McCay had two hits in each half of the Buena Vista doubleheader, accounting for one RBI and one run scored.
