Defending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and 2011 National Tournament qualifier St. Benedict, defeated Luther 2-0 in the season opener for both clubs this afternoon in St. Joseph, Minn.
St. Ben's out shot the Norse 27-9 and placed 14 shots on goal. St. Ben's was held scoreless until a Norse own goal at 50:22. The Blazers Piper Murray found the back of the net 12 minutes later to complete the scoring.
Maggie Herrity and Elly Arend led the Norse attack with three shots each, followed by Erika Balk with two. Cydney Haaland was credited with 12 saves.
Luther will complete its trip to St. Joseph with a match against UW-Stout tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
