Men's Tennis - Earlham College
|Date:||March 2, 2013|
After facing the No. 7 ranked team in the nation in its morning match, the Luther men’s tennis team headed back to the courts later that afternoon to play another nationally ranked foe in No. 30 Earlham. This match was also played at the DeWitt Tennis Center on the campus of Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Although there were close matches at the majority of the spots, the Norse came out on the wrong end of a 7-2 score for the second time on the day.
All three doubles matches were competitive throughout, but Earlham came up with clutch play at each spot to earn a trio of one-break victories. Luther’s Nick Mozena and James Ayer went down an early break and were unable to get it back, losing (8-5) to Kyle Richter and Phillip Locklear at No. 2. As that match finished, the Norse held a narrow 7-6 edge on the other two courts, but were unable to finish out either match. Samuel Cychosz and Matt Bellio lost (9-7) at No. 3 to Brad Maisey and Andrey Gavrilov and Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley lost by an identical score to Anton Bartashevich and Jack Ventura-Cruess at No. 1.
Ayer was up to the task yet again in singles, winning another third set super tie-breaker to nail down a (3-6, 6-4, (10-7)) victory over Ventura-Cruess at No. 4. Foley was also a winner, edging Gavrilov in a first set tie-breaker before cruising to a (7-6 (5), 6-2) win at No. 6. Mozena also played a tight match at No. 2, falling (7-5, 6-3) to Locklear.
