The Luther College men’s tennis team finished out another challenging weekend by hosting nationally ranked UW-Whitewater on Sunday, April 7. Luther hung in at several spots with Ramesh Karki winning at No. 1 singles over a ranked foe for the second straight day. That was the only point for the Norse as the Warhawks walked away with an 8-1 victory.
Karki and Quinn Foley fought back from a 6-3 deficit by earning a pair of late breaks to force a tie-breaker at No. 1 doubles. The Norse duo raced out to a 6-0 lead in the tie-breaker, but was unable to convert on several match points as UW-Whitewater’s tandem of Andy McGlashen and Andrew Bayliss rallied to win (9-8 (11-9)). Nick Mozena and James Ayer went down an early break to Byron Balkin and Jake Humphreys at No. 2 and the teams stayed even the rest of the way with UW-Whitewater winning (8-5). The score was identical at No. 3, but Matt Bellio and Sean Brown forged a huge rally after trailing 7-1, winning four straight games before falling (8-5) to Mitch Osborne and Kevin Friend.
Karki put together another strong performance on the singles court, defeating Balkin (6-2, 6-4) at No. 1 singles. Ayer and Foley each won six games with Ayer losing (6-3, 6-3) to Bayliss at No. 4 and Foley dropping a (6-2, 6-4) decision to Brian Klein at No. 6.
Luther is now 6-9 overall this season.
