The Luther College men’s tennis team faced its second foe of the day from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) and this time came through with a 9-0 sweep of Carthage to finish out the spring trip to Orlando, Florida on a winning note.
Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley earned another close win, holding off Jeff Lotz and Alex Boomgarden by an (8-5) count at No. 1 doubles. James Ayer and Sean Brown were (8-3) winners over Brandon Curtis and Conor Moon at No. 2 while Nick Mozena and Matt Bellio dispatched Ryan Jump and Brian Howes by an (8-2) score at No. 3.
Leading 3-0, the Norse wrapped up the team victory with quick wins from Ayer and Torstein Jystad. Ayer beat Howes (6-1, 6-2) at No. 4 while Jystad defeated Juan Robles (6-0, 6-1) at No. 5. Foley also won in straight sets at No. 6, earning a (6-3, 6-3) win against Tom Klassman.
The top three singles matches also went to a deciding third set super tie-breaker with Luther earning wins at all three spots. Mozena rallied to defeat Boomgarden (1-6, 6-2, (10-2)) at No. 2 while Karki did the same in a (1-6, 6-4, (10-7) win over Lotz at No. 1. Bellio held on for a (7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), (10-7)) victory against Jump at No. 3 to complete the sweep.
Luther is now 6-7 overall this season and ranked No. 16 in the Central Region. The Norse will travel to Cedar Rapids to face Coe on Saturday, April 6 before returning home to host UW-Whitewater on Sunday, April 7.
