The Luther men’s tennis team opened its 2013 campaign with a pair of matches at the Quad City Tennis Club on Saturday, Feb. 9. The Norse opened with an 8-1 victory against St. Norbert, rallying at a couple spots to earn a doubles sweep and then winning five of the six singles matches for the win.
Sean Brown and Samuel Cychosz started things off with an (8-3) victory at No. 3 against Travis Buechel and Nate Gosz, but the Norse fell behind by two breaks in the other two matches. After trailing 0-3, Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley rallied back to eventually pulled out a (9-7) win at No. 1 over Tim Hartwick and Nick Acosta. Nick Mozena and James Ayer were behind 2-6, but made a thrilling comeback, also notching a (9-7) win, defeating Casey Brice and Matt Lobeck to put the Norse ahead, 3-0.
Torstein Jystad locked down his first singles win of the spring in dominating fashion, rolling to a (6-1, 6-1) decision against Josh Sweere at No. 4. Foley clinched the team win with a (6-1, 6-2) victory over Zach Zdanovec at No. 6 and Karki quickly followed up with a (6-1, 6-0) win against Lobeck at No. 1. Mozena was a (6-1, 6-3) winner against Hartwick at No. 2, but the Green Knights responded with a (6-3, 6-4) victory from Buechel over Luther’s Matt Knutson to make it 7-1. Matt Bellio closed out the scoring by tallying a (7-5, 6-3) win against Acosta at No. 3.
