The Luther women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to three straight with a 7-2 victory over College of Saint Benedict on Saturday, Sept. 8 in Decorah, Iowa. The Norse used a doubles sweep to gain the early momentum and later used a couple of super tie-breaker wins to account for the final margin.
Cassandra Chalhoub and Lola White-Baer performed well at No. 1 doubles, cruising to an (8-2) victory against Victoria Beach and Daley Rupar. The Norse advantage reached 2-0 when Katy Lindstrom and Annie Whiteley polished off an (8-3) win over Beth Richmond and Rachel Raden at No. 3. Elise Allen and Maggie Helms faced the toughest contest of the three, finally winning the last three games to outlast the Blazer duo of Jamie Hoffman and Alec Dahlquist by an (8-4) score.
White-Baer continued her superb play with a (6-0, 6-0) win at No. 3 singles, defeating Beach to make it 4-0 on the scoreboard. Megan Wachholz clinched the match for Luther with a (6-1, 6-2) decision against Raden at No. 6. Even with the match decided, the Norse still had plenty of work to do as all four of the remaining players on the court had dropped the opening set to their Blazer counterpart.
St. Ben’s earned its first point with an impressive showing from Rupar, who defeated Allen (6-3, 6-1) at No. 2. They tallied a second point when Richmond edged Luther’s Adriana DePaolis (6-4, 6-4) at No. 5.
Luther regained its momentum when Lindstrom and Chalhoub both rallied to win in a deciding third set super tie-breaker. Lindstrom was a (3-6, 6-0, (10-0)) winner over Dahlquist at No. 4 while Chalhoub nailed down a (2-6, 6-1, (10-6)) decision against Hoffman at No. 1.
