Records fell as Luther defeated UW-Whitewater 123-120 this afternoon in the Luther pool.
In the first event of the afternoon, Luther's Clare Slagel set a new school and pool record and posted an NCAA III B-Cut of :57.96, swimming the 100 backstroke in the first leg of the 400 medley relay. Slagel, Sam Kuipers, Lexi Scharmer and Laura Boran won the event with a pool record time of 4:02.91. This foursome shattered the old mark of 4:10.77 set by a Luther team on Nov. 12, 2011.
UW-Whitewater's Kayla Martin and Amy Spaay also established new pool records. Martin won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:52.44, breaking the old mark of 10:52.95 set by Kristen Harvey of UNI Jan. 24, 2004.
Spaay won the 100 breaststroke with a pool record time of 1:05.99. The old mark of 1:06.63 was held by Megan Broskoff of UW-River Falls and set Dec. 8, 2001.
Slagel also won the 200 freestyle (1:58.26) as well as the 100 backstroke (58.18). First place finishes were also posted by Erin Connolly in the 50 freestyle (25.91), Lexi Scharmer in the 100 fly (1:01.38), and Elizabeth Reed in the 500 freestyle (5:22.61).
Zoe Johnson posted an NCAA III qualifying mark for 11 dives with a point total of 395.45.
The win gives Luther a dual meet record of 2-0. The Norse will return to action one week from today when they will travel to Grinnell College for a dual that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
