Luther battled the defending Iowa Conference champions Coe College to five sets tonight in the Regents Center, but unfortunately dropped a 3-2 decision to the Kohawks in the conference opener for both teams.
After losing the first two sets by scores of 25-18, 26-24, the Norse battled back to level the match with set victories of 25-20, 26-24. Coe took an early lead in the fifth and deciding set en route to the 15-11 victory.
Sophia Brown and Hannah Theisen led the Norse attack with 13 kills each. Lindsey Ryan dished out 38 assists. Jordyn Dudek and Natalee Johnson led the squad with 16 digs each. Ellen Pritchard and Alexis Dorschner also reached double digits in this category with 15 and 10 respectively.
Coe's Rachel Schaefer led all attackers with 20 kills. She was followed by Rachel Bosworth with 18 and Tiffany Frey with nine. Two-time all-conference performer Emily Ryan tallied 52 assists.
Both Luther and Coe are now 4-5 overall.
Luther returns to action this weekend when it will travel to the College of St. Catherine for a two-day tournament Sept. 14-15.
