Football - Loras College
|Date:||September 29, 2012|
Luther traveled to Loras College for the Iowa Conference opener for both teams. Unfortunately for Norse fans, a hot quarterback and big plays propelled the Duhawks to a 28-25 victory.
Luther took an early 14-0 lead scoring twice in the first quarter, but the Duhawks scored 21 unanswered points and never trailed the rest of the game.
Luther's first two scores came on a 51-yard run by Dan Ridenour four minutes into the contest and on a 20-yard touchdown strike from Kody Moore to Adam Bohr with six minutes remaining in the first frame. Seth Streeter pulled the Norse to within four points at halftime thanks to a 30-yard field goal with just under six minutes left in the half.
Trailing 28-17 late in the fourth, the Norse made things interesting when Drew Helle pulled down a 30-yard pass from Moore with two minutes left in the game. A successful two-point conversion proved to be the final score of the afternoon. Unfortunately, Luther was not able to recover the on-side kick, did force Loras to punt the ball, but needed to go 80-yards with no time outs remaining with any chance to tie or win the ball game.
Ridenour completed the afternoon with 104 yards on 15 carries. Bohr and Matt Jaronik both put up career single game highs for receptions and reception yardage. Bohr led the Norse receiving corp with seven catches for 86 yards, while Jaronik pull in six passes for 70 yards.
Loras quarterback Dylan Jones had a big afternoon connecting on 14-of-18 attempts for 249 yards and three touchdowns. Jones threw touchdown passes of 31, 25 and 33 yards. Duhawk running back Nate Carrier rushed for 159 yards on 34 carries with a long of 34.
"While everyone continued to compete throughout the game, we need to make more plays to find ourselves on the other end of the scoreboard," commented Head Coach Mike Durnin. "Consistency is our biggest opponent right now. Being minus one in turnovers does not help, we ended up with penalties at the wrong time, and still need to work at minimizing explosive plays. We made some nice improvements with our punting game as Austin Cassell did a nice job punting and will only get better. Dan Ridenour did a great job running the ball and Adam Bohr and Matt Jaronik did some nice things in the passing game. You have to give Loras a lot of credit, their quarterback played very well and made some great passes while their running back ran the ball with a lot of determination. I am confident our players will continue to work hard at the process and there are still a lot of opportunities for a great conference season. "
Next week the Norse will host the Spartans from University of Dubuque for Homecoming. Kick-off will take place in Carlson Stadium at 1:00 p.m. This game will be video streamed beginning with the pregame show starting at 12:50 p.m.
