Three Luther College wrestlers earned return trips to the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships. Loras College hosted the Central Regional today at the Five Flags Center, Dubuque, Iowa. The top-three place finishers in each weight class qualified for the national finale.
Justin Kreiter, a 2016 All-American, won the regional championship at 184 for the second consecutive year. Kreiter defeated Christos Giatras of Augustana-Rock Island 9-2 in the title match. Kreiter will be making his second trip to the national championships.
Tristan Zurfluh, who was a 2016 all-American at 157 a year ago, advanced to the national meet for the second year in a row, this time at 165. Zurfluh, who was seeded fourth, defeated the top-seed Bryce Steiert of Wartburg 6-1 in the semifinals. Ryan Vandall of Central, the second seed, narrowly defeated Zurfluh for the regional championship 4-3.
Javier Reyes had to wrestle six matches to earn a return trip to the national meet. Reyes lost his quarterfinal match at 174 to Eddie Smith of Loras 6-3. Reyes won then won three matches in the consolation bracket, setting up a rematch with Smith in the third place match. Reyes won 4-2 in sudden victory to become Luther’s third qualifier.
As a team, Luther finished in fifth place from the field of 15 teams posting a point total of 90 points.
The NCAA Division III Wrestling championships will be held March 10-11 at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wis.
