Nationally ranked No. 38 Coe College defeated Luther 6-3 this afternoon in Cedar Rapids and captured the 2017 Iowa Conference championship.The victory also means that Coe will host the IIAC Automatic Qualifier Tournament May 5-6. Final league competition over the next week will determine what teams will also qualify for the six-team tournament field.
The Kohawks held a 2-1 advantage after doubles and went on to win four of six singles matches. Luther's lone win in doubles was at No. 1 where Kyle Appel and Trent Schneider defeated Josh Pudlo and Luke Ford (8-6). Pudlo and Ford entered the match ranked No. 11 in the region.
Schneider at No. 2 singles and Sam Buffington at No. 6 both won three-set victories. Schneider defeated Nate Ackert (7-6, 4-6, 10-5). Buffington defeated Ford (1-6, 6-4, 6-0).
The loss gives Luther a league record of 5-1, 15-5 overall.
The Norse will wrap up their conference schedule on Tuesday, April 25 when they will travel to Dubuque, Iowa to play both Loras College and University of Dubuque. The Loras match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and the Dubuque match will begin at 4:00 p.m.
