The Luther men’s tennis team bounced back from its loss to UW-Whitewater with a victory over UW-La Crosse at the Winona Tennis Center in Winona, Minn. The Norse used a doubles sweep to surge ahead and then split the six singles matches to pick up the win.
Matt Bellio and Sam Cychosz took charge early in their match, racing to an (8-4) victory over Nick Skanavis and Tommy Joswiak at No. 3 doubles to put the Norse on the board. The battles at No. 1 and No. 2 were both tight until the very end when the Norse tandems each broke at 6-5 and then held to earn (8-5) wins. Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley knocked off Tony Mirasola and Pete Stadum at the top spot while James Ayer and Kyle Appel rallied from an early deficit to beat Kyle McGrane and Dante Pitera at No. 2.
Leading 3-0, the Norse proceeded to drop the first set at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 as La Crosse gained the early momentum in singles. The Eagles tallied their first point of the day when Skanavis held off the late run from Bellio at No. 4, winning (6-3, 7-6 (5). Karki battled back from a one set deficit, cruising in the second set and earning a (3-6, 6-0, (10-7)) decision over Mirasola at No. 1. Torstein Jystad almost completed a similar comeback, rebounding from a 6-3, 3-0 deficit to force his match into a super tie-breaker, eventually falling (6-3, 3-6, (10-3)) to McGrane at No. 2.
With the score at 4-2 in favor of the Norse, Appel stepped up and delivered a (6-3, 6-3) victory over Stadum at No. 3 to clinch the win. Ayer followed with a (6-4, 6-1) decision against Pitera at No. 5 before La Crosse’s Matt Bulger edged out Foley (6-3, 6-4) at No. 6 to account for the final margin.
The win give Luther an overall record of 9-4. The Norse head back to Winona on Saturday, March 15 to face Morningside and host St. Mary’s University.
