The Luther College men’s tennis team entered the IIAC Automatic Qualifier Tournament as the No. 2 seed and advanced to the title match with a 5-1 victory over Central, the No. 5 seed. The semi-final match was played at the Clarke Racquet Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Norse grabbed a pair of doubles victories and followed with lopsided wins at the top three singles positions to clinch the win.
Although Luther’s Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley were upended by an (8-3) margin at No. 1 doubles by Central’s Kyle Freischlag and West Adelman, the Norse came through with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the lead into singles. Nick Mozena and James Ayer defeated Tim Kahl and John Seier at No. 2 while Matt Bellio and Sean Brown dispatched Zane Hendricks and Josh Forst at No. 3 by the same margin.
Karki made quick work of Freischlag at No. 1 singles, winning (6-0, 6-0) to extend the Norse lead to 3-1. Matt Bellio was a (6-2, 6-0) winner against Collin Schares at No. 3, putting Luther in the driver’s seat with a 4-1 advantage. Mozena clinched the match with a (6-2, 6-2) victory over Adelman at No. 2.
Norse face top seed Coe College tomorrow at Noon in championship match with the winner advancing to the NCAA III National Tournament.
