Luther took a step closer to qualifying for the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament after defeating Simpson College 4-1 this afternoon here in Decorah.
The Norse held a 2-0 lead after the first period, thanks to goals by Saul Rosales (8) and Oket Dakwa-Agyekum (2) in the second and 25th minutes respectively. Dane Huinker (1) and James Garcia-Prats (3) assisted on the second goal.
Jon Gednalske (4) gave the Norse a 3-0 lead, scoring on a header off a corner kick by Rosales (4) at 63:04. Simpson scored its lone goal of the match in the 71st minute. Garcia-Prats (3) completed the afternoon's scoring on a penalty kick at 86:46.
Tommy Breen went the distance in front of the nets for the Norse and turned away five shots on goal.
Luther improved to 2-3 in the IIAC, 8-4-2 overall. Simpson fell to 2-2-1 in league play, 9-6-1 overall.
The victory was huge for the Norse as they moved into a three-way tie for fifth place with Central and Coe. The Norse will complete the Iowa Conference schedule with a match at Coe on Oct. 20, and then host Wartburg on Oct. 23. The IIAC Tournament will begin on Oct. 27.
Luther will wrap up its non-conference schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 17 when it will travel to UW-Platteville for a match that is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
