Luther is 3-0 in the Iowa Conference for the first time since 1990, thanks to a 41-38 come-from-behind overtime victory over Nebraska Wesleyan University in front of the Homecoming crowd.
It was an interesting afternoon that included a two-hour delay due to lightning in the Decorah area. Luther had just scored to tied the game 21-21 with 2:36 left in the first half when the delay took place.
When the teams returned to the field, Nebraska Wesleyan rolled off 17 straight points and held a 38-21 advantage heading into the final frame. Luther scored on runs of 16-yards by Travis Vargas, and 38-yard field goal by Cory Wirth, and a 58-yard scamper by Yassine Ouazzani, that tied the game at 38-38 with 3:56 remaining.
Wirth had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but his 40-yard attempt that would have matched his career long, missed just right.
In overtime, Wirth was given a second chance and split the uprights from 25-yards out, that proved to be the game winner.
The Norse defensive unit held Nebraska Wesleyan, forcing Prairie Wolves place kicker Jacson Hinze to attempt the tying field goal from 45-yards. His attempt fell wide right.
Brady Letney led a Norse attack that tallied 392 yards of total offense. Letney rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns that included a career long 64-yarder.
Ouazzani completed the afternoon with 69 yards and Nick Slavens tallied 43. Slavens also had a big day returning three kick-offs for 103 that included a career long of 58 yards.
The Norse defensive unit took over in the fourth quarter, holding the Prairie Wolves to 69 yards and forcing a key turnover early in the frame. Dante Joseph led the team with 10 tackles. Chris Pinkney and Mitch Van Epps were next with eight, followed by Luke Pulliam and David Ponath with seven.
The Norse are now 4-0 in overtime games under the direction of Head Coach Aaron Hafner. Luther's overall record is now 4-1. Nebraska Wesleyan fell to 0-4 in the IIAC, 0-6 overall.
Next week, Luther travels to Simpson College. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
