The 2012 Capital One Academic All-District ® Football Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, were announced today. Luther defensive lineman Obi Ukabiala was listed among the 25 players named Academic All-District ® in District 8. This is the second time in as many years he has been so honored.
The award recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One became the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA’s Academic All-America teams programs in 2011.
This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
Academic All-District ® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first, second and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Ukabiala, a three-year letter winner, has started every game this season on the defensive line. With one game remaining on the schedule, he has been credited with 24 tackles (12 solo) that includes a team high four sacks.
Ukabiala is a senior biology major with a GPA of 3.91. He is the son of Buchi and Chenyere Ukabiala of Urbandale, Iowa.
