Luther College and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse continued what may be the longest running duel in the nation this afternoon here in Decorah.
Starting in 1955, the first year of cross country in Luther history, these two teams have raced each other 57 times. The first two races took place in 1955 with La Crosse posting 22-33 and 15-46 victories.
This afternoon, Luther's Jackson Espeset led a group of five runners that all placed in the top-eight en route to a 23-34 victory. Espeset covered the four mile course in 21:22.8 and finished second behind the Eagles Carlton Folster who was clocked at 21:08.1.
Espeset was followed by Soren Thompson (3rd - 21:24.8), Matt Rubbins (4th - 21:36.5), Brock Laue (6th - 21:44.9) and Matt Weitzel (8th - 21:53.8).
Sip Simelane (10th - 21:57.3) and John Freude (11th - 21:57.6) completed the top seven.
The Iowa Conference Championships are next on the schedule. Coe College will host the league finale at Noelridge Park, Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 27. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
