It was the 2017 home opener this afternoon as Luther hosted Coe College for the first game of a three-game Iowa Conference series. The Kohawks defeated the Norse 4-2.
Coe scored three runs on four hits in the top of the second and added one run in the eighth. Kyle Alvarado drove in two of the runs in the second frame with a double to right field. With two outs and the bases loaded, Grant Henning was credited with an RBI after he was hit-by-a-pitch. Jordan Kaplan drove in the lone run in the eighth with a single.
Following Luther's first hit of the game by Trent Athmann in the bottom of the second, Kohawk starter Ben Jacobson took control. Jacobson, who was credited with the win (2-1), retired a string of 15 in a row, before Bryce Hingst slapped a single to right field in the seventh. Jacobson finished the game allowing four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four.
Luther made things interesting in its last at-bat. Following a lead-off double to right-center by Joey Sullivan, the Norse strung together three consecutive hits that produced their two runs. Athmann and Jake Halverson were both credited with RBI singles. With the sacks jammed and two outs, Cody Reimer hit a line drive to left field that was caught by a diving Isaac Evans to end the game.
Nate Beckman (1-3) allowed four runs on nine hits in eight innings of work. Beckman walked two and struck out eight.
The loss drops Luther's Iowa Conference record to 1-3, 8-7 overall. Coe improved to 3-1 in league play, 10-4 overall.
These two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a double header (2x9) tomorrow. First game will begin at Noon.
