Luther won its season openers against Carleton College (MN) 7-5, 6-5 early this morning at U.S. Bank Stadium home of the Minnesota Vikings.
In game one with the score tied 4-4, Trent Athman drove in what proved to be the game winning runs with a single up the middle. Athman drove in Joe Silversmith who started the frame with a hit-by-pitch. Bryce Hingst followed with a double to right field.
Carleton made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh scoring its final run with two outs. Colin Coffey who took over on the mound in the seventh finished the frame with a pop up to first base to record his first save of the year.
Silversmith was credited with the win going 5 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out four.
In game two, Luther did all of its damage in the fourth and fifth innings. The Norse scored four in the fourth and two in the fifth, and held a 6-3 lead with Carleton batting in the top of the seventh. The Knights loaded the bases, but managed just two runs. Cody Reimer took over on the mound from right field and got the final two outs of the ball game to record the save.
Jon Opdahl and Joey Sullivan both drove in two runs. Opdahl was 2-for-4 and Sullivan was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Athman and Jake Halverson were also credited with an RBI.
Luther will take its 2-0 record and travel to Washington University-St. Louis this Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5. The Norse will play one nine inning game against the Bears on Saturday with a start time of 2:00 p.m. Sunday's double header will begin at Noon. Both games will be video streamed.
