Luther and No. 20 Wartburg were finally able to play the first two games of their four-game series this evening in Waverly. This twin bill was originally scheduled to take place April 9.
In game one, Wartburg's Michael Schinstock pitched a complete game one hitter, leading the Knights to a 4-1 victory.
Eric Pittman had the only hit for the Norse, a lead-off single in the top of the first. Andrew Bergmeier drove in the David Lowe while grounding out to second in the second frame. Lowe started the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch and balk.
Zach Hendrikson each had two hits as the Norse defeated the Knights 6-3. Briggs, Matt Larson, Alec Knop and Brian Paulsrud all had an RBI.
Nate Whitham (1-2) pitched seven full en route to his first win of the season. Whitham allowed three runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out two.
The split gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 7-11, 11-15 overall. Wartburg, who had its 12-game win streak snapped, remains atop the league standings with a mark of 15-3, 26-6.
These two teams will wrap up this series in Decorah on Tuesday, April 30.
This Friday and Saturday, April 26-27, Luther will host Loras College. The two teams will begin this four-game series on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
