Luther College Head Coach of Baseball Bryan Nikkel, was honored by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) at its 49th annual awards banquet held Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Nikkel was presented the Four-Year College Coach of the Year award. Nikkel was a finalist for this prestigious honor along with head coach Brian Dent of Morningside College and head coach Seth Wing of Cornell College.
“It is an honor to receive this award from the IHSBCA,” stated Nikkel. “This award is a reflection of our entire baseball program. We have outstanding assistant coaches and student-athletes who work hard on a daily basis throughout the year. The success we have had the past two years is a direct reflection of these efforts."
During the 2016 campaign, Coach Nikkel led Luther to a record of 34-14, the Iowa Conference Tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Division III. The Norse went on to claim their first IIAC post-season tournament title, earning a trip to the NCAA Division III Central Regional. Luther’s appearance at the Central Regional was its fifth in school history and first since 2007. The Norse set single season school records for wins (34), hits (485) and doubles (116).
The 2017 campaign will be coach Nikkel’s third at the helm of the Norse program. During his short tenure he has produced a record of 54-37.
Prior to Luther he was the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D for four years. During this stretch, Augustana produced four 30-plus win seasons and made two NCAA III National Tournament appearances.
