Nationally ranked No. 17 Wartburg College defeated Luther this afternoon in Carlson Stadium by a final of 41-16.
Tied 7-7 at the end of the first half, Wartburg exploded for 24 points in the final two frames en route to the victory. The Knights scored five of the seven times they had the ball in the second half. Two Norse turnovers also set up easy scores for the Knights.
Nick Slavens had a monster afternoon for the Norse. He rushed for 125 yards on 11 carries and also had 146 yards in kick-off returns, both single game career highs. His career long 58-yard return set up Luther's lone touchdown in the second half.
The Norse struck first in the contest when Yassine Ouazzani broke loose for an 18-yard touchdown run with 5:01 left in the first quarter.
Luther's final two points of the game came on a blocked Wartburg PAT, that was picked up by Damon Stroup and returned to the opposite end zone for the two defensive points.
Statistically the game was close. Wartburg tallied 332 yards of total offense to Luther's 299. Wartburg's attack was balanced as it produced 165 yards on the ground and 167 in the air. Luther rushed for 284 and threw for 44.
The loss drops Luther into a three-way tie for second place with Central and Simpson at 3-2. Luther's overall record is now 4-3. Wartburg remains unbeaten in league play and is 5-0, 7-0 overall.
Next week, Luther travels to Coe College for a game that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
