Luther's Nick Slavens scored on a six-yard touchdown run with 55 ticks left on the game clock, that secured a 21-17 victory over No. 25 University of Dubuque this afternoon in Carlson Stadium. 

The 10-play 75-yard drive that ate up 3:45, followed a Brayden Neuendorf 20-yard field goal, that gave the Spartans a 17-14 lead with 4:35 left in the fourth quarter. 

Dubuque's final series resulted in two incomplete passes, a sack by Sam Scheidt and Michael Noll, and an illegal one-yard pass to offensive lineman Mitchell Temperly as quarterback Michael Briscoe was being taken down. The penalty was refused and Luther quarterback Ian Kuykendall took a knee to end the game.

Luther's first touchdown of the game tied the game at 7-7 late the the third quarter, when Matt Foundos blocked Jacob Rentz's punt and it was recovered in the Spartan endzone by Scott Edwards

The Norse defense played well holding the Spartans to 273 yards of total offense. The Spartans entered the game averaging 458.7 yards per game. The only big play of the afternoon by the Spartans was a 68-yard touchdown run by Maurece Herrion late in the third quarter. Herrion completed the game with 123 yards on 11 carries. 

Leading the Norse defensive efforts were linebackers Patrick Beatty and Colton Janssen who were both credited with 12 tackles. Defensive back Dante Joseph also tallied double digits in this category with 11. Joseph was also credited with one fumble recovery and two pass break-ups.

A balanced rushing attack led to 205 yards for the Norse. Yassine Ouazzani had 60 yards, Anthony Hollingshed tallied 55, Brady Letney had 49 and Slavens finished the afternoon with 34. 

Kuykendall led the Norse down the field on the game winning drive, replacing Letney who was injured on the second play of the final series. Kuykendall set up the game winner connecting with Ricardo Chavez for a 42-yard strike that finished on the Dubuque seven. Three plays later, Slavens scored what proved to be the game winner.

This was the conference opener for Luther that is now 2-1 overall. Dubuque fell to 1-1 in the Iowa Conference, 3-1 overall. 

Next week, Luther travels to Buena Vista University for a game that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Storm Lake, Iowa.
