Luther and Central wrapped up their three-game series this afternoon in Pella, Iowa. The Dutch defeated the Norse 2-1 and swept the series.
Central pitchers Billy Coppage and Zach Edwards held Luther to eight hits and one run. Coppage was credited with the win going seven innings, allowing no runs on four hits. He walked one and struck out three. Edwards was credited with the save after holding the Norse to one run on four hits in two innings of work.
Jake Halverson drove in Luther's lone run in the top of the ninth. Bryce Hingst and Trent Athmann produced back-to-back singles with two outs. Waylon Alvarado and Spencer Olson pinch ran for Hingst and Athmann respectively and Waylon scored when Halverson drove a single down the right field line.
Nate Beckman (1-4) had another solid outing on the mound, but for the fourth consecutive league game, the Norse bats could not produce enough runs to secure a victory. During this four-game stretch the Norse have been defeated by a score of 4-2 twice, 3-0 and 2-1 this afternoon.
Luther, 5-7 in the Iowa Conference and 12-11 overall, will face Simpson College in Indianola this Friday and Saturday. The first of this three-game series will begin on Friday 5:30 p.m. Saturday's twin bill is scheduled to begin at Noon.
