In a battle between nationally ranked teams, No. 4 Luther swept No. 22 Simpson this afternoon here in Decorah. The Norse posted a 1-0 victory in game one and 9-6 win in the nightcap.
In game one, Miranda McCay drove in what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the third. McCay hit a single up the middle that scored Anna Strein who lead-off the inning with a double to left-center.
Amanda Witzlib (13-1) went the distance in the circle en route to the win. Witzlib faced 24 batters, allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out 10.
In the nightcap, the Norse knocked out Storm starter Abbie VanVleet in one inning scoring five runs on five hits. The Norse added four more in the second en route to the sweep.
Lead-off hitter McCay went 4-for-4 and scored twice. Anna Strein and Katie Wieland both went 2-for-4. Strein drove in drove in four runs and Wieland two. Carli Radil and Lindsey Uphoff also had multiple hit efforts.
Annie Versnik (8-0) was credited with the win pitching the final 5 2/3 innings. Versnik allowed two runs on six hits, walked one and struck out one.
The two wins keeps Luther atop the Iowa Conference standings with a record of 8-0, 29-1 overall. Simpson fell to 1-5 in the IIAC, 22-8 overall.
Luther travels to UW-La Crosse on Tuesday, April 14 for a non-conference double header that begins at 3:00 p.m.
