Coe College remains tied atop the Iowa Conference standings after defeating Luther 80-72 this afternoon in the Regents Center. The Kohawks were one of five teams that entered today's action with records of 2-1 in league play.
In a ball game that saw both teams combine for 20 three-pointers, it was the free throw line that proved to be the difference in the game. The Kohwaks connected on 23-of-29 attempts at the charity stripe, while Luther connected on 13-of-17. The Norse did the majority of their offensive damage from behind the arc connecting on 13-of-36 attempts.
Trailing by 12 (53-41) midway through the second half, the Norse battled back thanks to a 24-13 run, and pulled to within one (65-66) with 4:12 remaining. It proved to be as close as the Norse would get the rest of the way as the Kohawks finished with a 14-7 run.
Jake Martin recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs. Eleven of Martin's boards were on the defensive glass. Aaron Huber and Nathan Meyer completed the list of double digit scorers with 12 and 11 respectively.
Coe's Jacob Timm also tallied a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. JT Vonderhaar led the team with 17 points and Matt Dauust was credited with 16.
The loss drops Luther's Iowa Conference mark to 0-4, 4-11 overall. Coe improved to 3-1, 9-6 overall.
Luther will travel to Simpson College on Wednesday, Jan. 21 for a game that will begin at 8:00 p.m.
