NCAA III National Championships

Day One Recap: After the first day of action at the 2015 NCAA III National Championships, Luther has three All-Americans and two wrestlers still alive in the championship bracket. In the team race, Luther is in seventh place with 26 points.

Evan Obert (133) became a two-time All-American, posting a fall (4:12) over Zach Haynes of Delaware Valley in the quarterfinals. Obert's victory was also the 100th of his career. Obert will face Chad Bartschenfled of Augsburg in tomorrow's semifinals. 

Drew Van Anrooy (141) earned All-American honors defeating Matt Adcock of UW-Whitewater 3-2 in the quarterfinals and will face Nick Steger of Loras in the semifinals.

Conner Herman (285), who was making his second appearance at the national finale, earned All-American honors for the first time defeating Cole Tristan of Brockport State 4-2 in sudden victory with four seconds left in overtime in the All-American round of the consolation bracket. Herman advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship bracket by defeataing Anthony Edgren of UW-Whitewater 5-3 and then was defeated by the No. 2 seed Donny Longendyke of Augsburg by tech fall 17-2.

At the conclusion of today's first session, the Norse had five of their seven national qualifiers still alive. Unfortunately for Blake Letney (165) and Jayden DeVilbiss (184) their national tournaments came two an end after losing two matches this morning. 

Letney was defeated by Nolan Barger of Lycoming 5-3 and then by major decision by Ethan Farmer of Wabash in a pigtail match of the consolation bracket. Letney, who was making his first appearance at the national finale ended the season with a mark of 19-13.

DeVilbiss was defeated by Daniel Manganaro of Ursinus 6-5 in his opening match and then lost by fall (3:39) to Matt Reickhoff of UW-Eau Claire. DeVilbiss ends his Luther career with a record of 106-47.

In tonight's consolation round, Dakota Gray and Reed Van Anrooy fell one match shy of earning All-American honors. Gray was eliminated from the tournament after being defeated by Luke Lohr of Waynesburg 4-2. Gray  advanced to the All-American round by defeating Mason Bohm of UW-Platteville by fall (0:40) and Eamonn Gaffney of Ithaca 5-4. In his opening match of the day he was defeated by the No. 8 seed Elroy Perkin of UW-Whitewater 8-4.

Van Anrooy was defeated by Drew Wagenhoffer of Wartburg 6-1 in the All-American round. Van Anrooy advanced to this match by defeating Michael Polizzi of Stevens Institute of Technology 8-3 in his first match of the consolation bracket.  He started the day losing a hard fought 6-4 sudden victory decision to the top seed Nick Carr of Washington and Jefferson College.

Tomorrow's action will begin at 10:00 a.m. EST.

Day Two Recap: Evan Obert (133) finished third today. Obert defeated the No. 2 seed Alex Gomez of Ithaca 9-4 in the third place match. In the semifinals of the championship bracket, Obert lost a hard fought 6-4 TB2 decision to Chad Bartchenfeld of Augsburg. Obert responded by defeating Nathan Pike of New York University 7-3 in the consolation semifinals setting up his third place finish. Obert ends his career as a two-time All-American with a career record of 102-36.

Drew Van Anrooy (141) became the first Luther wrestler since 2009 to advance to a championship bout. Van Anrooy made quick work of Nick Steger of Loras by fall in 41 seconds in the semifinals. In the title bout, Cary Palmer of Hunter College (NY) was awarded a take down with two seconds remaining in the third overtime and defeated Van Anrooy 4-2 SV2. The loss was only the third this season for Van Anrooy and also snapped a 23-match win streak. Van Anrooy ends his first season in a Norse uniform 25-3.

Conner Herman placed eighth. Herman was defeated by fall (4:24) by Anthony Edgren of UW-Whitewater, who Herman defeated in the opening round of the tournament 5-3. In his opening match of today's consolation round, Herman was defeated by Zachery Roseberry of Delaware Valley 8-2. Herman ends his season with a record of 18-9 and his first All-American honor.
