In a battle for the outright Iowa Conference championship, the University of Dubuque protected its home floor and defeated Luther 94-81. The conference title was the first for the Spartans in school history.
In a game that saw 10 lead changes, a four-minute drought by the Norse early in the second half proved to be costly. During this stretch, the Spartans outscored the Norse 16-0 and led by 21 (72-51) with nine minutes left in the game.
Dubuque blistered the nets connecting on 58.8 percent of its attempts that included 50 percent from behind the three-point line. Luther shot 35.8 percent and was 27.6 from behind the arch.
Both teams had four players score double digits. Anna Madrigal and Moran Lonning led the Norse with 18 points each. Meagan Koepnick tallied 16 and Kylie Romeo chipped in 13.
Dubuque was led by Emily Brinker and Jenna Kotas who both reached the 20-plus mark. Brinker poured in a game high 25, while Kotas tallied 22. Meggie Schmidt and Brittany Collier scored 14 and 11 respectively.
The loss, plus a Coe victory over Buena Vista University (79-62), dropped the Norse (10-4) into a two-way tie for second with the Kohawks (10-4).
The Luther-Coe tiebreaker was broken via random draw (school golf balls out of a hat). Physical draw was held at Coe by Joshua Schroeder Director of Information/Assistant to the Commissioner, with Coe team representatives present. Luther team representatives and Commissioner Chuck Yrigoyen were connected via FaceTime from Dubuque. Luther won the draw and will be the No. 2 seed for the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament.
Luther will host a semifinal game on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7:00 p.m. The Norse will play the winner of the No. 6 Simpson at No. 3 Coe quarterfinal game that will take place in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
