In a game where both teams struggled shooting the basketball, Luther defeated Simpson tonight in the Regents Center 45-35. The Storm connected on 22.8 percent of their attempts, while Luther connected on 25 percent. Luther's full court pressure produced almost half of the point total as the Norse tallied 21 points off of Storm turnovers. Simpson was credited with 26 turnovers, while Luther committed 19.
Luther held a 21-13 advantage at halftime and saw their lead dwindle to one (25-24) with 13 minutes remaining. It proved to be as close as the Storm would get the rest of the way as the Norse finished the final seven minutes outscoring the Storm 20-11.
Kylie Romeo led a trio of double digit scorers for the Norse with 11 points. Both Meagan Koepnick and Carrie Kilen tallied 10.
A bit of history was also made tonight as Luther recorded a victory scoring less than 50 points for the 19th time in school history. The last was during the 2000-01 campaign when Luther defeated Augustana-Rock Island in the season opener 46-39.
The win was key as Luther (16-4) improved to 6-3 in league play and is now in a three-way tie for second place. Simpson (14-6) fell to 4-5 and is now tied for fifth with Wartburg.
Luther returns to action this Saturday when they will host Buena Vista University (2-7, 7-13). Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
