Luther wrapped up a busy weekend with an 8-1 loss to Kalamazoo at the Markin Center in Kalamazoo, Mich.  Luther pushed the Hornets at several positions, but was only able to salvage a point at No. 5 singles from James Ayer.

Torstein Jystad and Isaiah Mayerchak had the closest doubles match, falling (9-7) to Kalamazoo’s David DeSimone and Mike Korn.  The Hornets’ duo of Branden Metzler and Alan Faber won by an (8-5) margin over Ayer and Kyle Appel at No. 2 and also won (8-4) at No. 1, where Peter Rothstein and Robert Hudson defeated Luther’s Ramesh Karki and Quinn Foley to complete the doubles sweep.

Trailing 3-0, the Norse continued to battle in singles with Karki (No. 1) and Appel (No. 3) each winning the opening set while Kalamazoo won the first set at No. 2 and No. 4.  The Hornets made it 4-0 when Hudson knocked off Matt Bellio (7-5, 6-1) at No. 4.  Metzler rallied to defeat Karki (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) at No. 1 to clinch the match for Kalamazoo.  Korn also came back from a one set deficit to beat Appel (2-6, 6-1, 6-1) at No. 3.  After Jystad forced a deciding third set, Rothstein grabbed the early advantage and gave the Hornets a third straight three set victory (6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-1) at No. 2.  The Hornet lead grew to 8-0 when Spencer Navarre defeated Luther’s Mayerchak (6-3, 6-3) at No. 6.  Ayer put the Norse on the board when he rallied to win (3-6, 7-5, (10-5) at No. 5 singles.

Luther is now 7-3 overall this season.
