Luther traveled to Simpson College for its Iowa Conference opener this afternoon. The Norse split with the Storm 2-6, 13-3 in six innings.
In game one, The Storm scored three runs in both the second and fourth innings off starter Becca Girvan en route to the victory. The Storm's Britney Steele hit a two-out three-run home run to left field in the second frame that proved to be the game winner.
Kayla Hatting scored on a wild pitch in the fifth and Alise Miller hit a solo shot in the sixth. Miller's home run was her third on the season.
Carli Radil led the Norse attack with a 3-for-4 performance driving in four runs. Radil hit a two-run home run in the third and had RBI singles in both the fourth and sixth frames.
Hiliary Pennington was 4-for-5 with an RBI, Miranda McCay was 2-for-5 with two RBI as the lead-off hitter. Kelsey Rose and Paige Lobdell also had multiple hits.
Topanga Skiles picked up her third win of the season. Skiles threw 5 1/3 innings, allowed three runs on five hits, walked two and struck out four.
The Norse blew this game wide open with an eight run sixth. The Norse tallied five hits and had a bit of help from the Storm who committed four errors.
The split gives No. 5 Luther an overall record of 16-3, 1-1 in the Iowa Conference. Simpson is now 3-1 in league play, 16-10 overall.
The Norse will return to action on Monday afternoon when they will host No. 11 Central College (2-0, 20-4) at 3:00 p.m.
