NCAA III Program at Luther College
As a member of NCAA III, Luther College endorses and subscribes to the Division III philosophy statement. The following is an adaptation of the NCAA III philosophy statement that outlines the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the Luther College athletics program.
Luther College places highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience. In so doing, the college seeks to strengthen the integration of goals and objectives in athletics with academic and developmental objectives and to assure the integration of athletes with other students (institutional research).
Luther College places special importance on the impact of athletics on the participants rather than on spectators and places greater emphasis on the internal constituency (students, alumni and special friends) than on the general public and its entertainment needs. To achieve this end, the Luther College athletics program:
a) Encourages participation by maximizing the number of athletics opportunities in varsity sports;
b) Permits the coach to judge the worthiness of participation of each student-athlete, and expects the student-athlete to accept the responsibilities associated with participation in varsity athletics. Skill level and quality of play are among factors used by a coach to determine worthiness for participation;
c) Ensures that participants receive the same treatment as other students. They have no unique privileges in admissions, academic advising, course selection, grading, living accommodations or financial aid. Similarly, athletes are not denied rights and opportunities that would be available to non-athletes;
d) Is controlled, financed and staffed through the same general procedures as other departments of the college;
e) Gives equal emphasis to women's and men's programs. The desired quality of competition is similar in all sports. Participant interests will be one factor considered in the determination of the level of support provided by the college to each sport;
f) Supports students in their efforts to reach high levels of performance by providing them with adequate facilities, competent coaching, and appropriate competitive opportunities with students from similar institutions;
g) Gives primary emphasis to in-season, conference and regional competition, but exceptional teams and individuals may be encouraged through postseason championships; and
h) Encourages the development of sportsmanship and positive societal attitudes in all constituents, including student-athletes, coaches, administrative personnel and spectators.
The intercollegiate athletics program is highly structured, demanding, and presents elements of risk for bodily injury. Students participating in intercollegiate athletics assume all risks associated with participating in intercollegiate athletics. In order to reduce risk of injury, students intending to participate in intercollegiate athletics should prepare themselves physically by completing a pre-season conditioning program. Students interested in a less structured competitive program should consider one or more of the broad variety of club sports and intramural sports available to all students.
