Iowa representative Mark Smith gave the keynote talk of the Don Kemp Memorial Lecture, titled “Social Workers Stand Up” on May 2. His talk focused on the history of social work and how social workers can use the past to inspire their work in the future.

Sheldon Smith

Sheldon Smith ('16) Connects His Love for Sports with Social Work

Social Work Major Sheldon Smith ('16) loved being part of the wrestling team at Luther, even working summers at Luther's wrestling camps for middle and high school students. It was his involvement in camps like these that made Smith decide to pursue a career working with teenagers.

JD Davis '15

JD Davis ('15) Studies the Norwegian Philosophy of Incarceration

Social Work Major JD Davis ('15) got the opportunity to travel to Norway through the Imagine Fellowship program in June 2014. Greatly interested by the U.S. prison system, he used his month to travel abroad to Norway to compare Norway's incarceration system to that of the United States.

Luther's Holm and Kovacovich named Peace Scholars

Luther College juniors Emily Holm and Katie Kovacovich have been selected as Peace Scholars for the 2015-16 academic year. The pair will spend seven weeks this summer studying peace and conflict resolution in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway.

Social Work Major, Alexandra Lohrbach ('15), attended Iowa N.E.W. Leadership Institute, May 19-23, 2015 at the University of Iowa, where she had the opportunity to listen and speak with many female leaders in all areas of the public sector - from legislators to teachers to non-profit directors.
