Matthew C. Simpson is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Head of the Philosophy Department. He received his B.A. in philosophy magna cum laude from Trinity College (CT), and the PhD from Boston University, where he was awarded the University Professors Modernity Fellowship. Before coming to Luther, he taught at Phillips Academy (Andover) and Suffolk University.
Professor Simpson has been a fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, Austria, as well as a recipient of research grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Aspen Institute. He is the author of numerous articles and books including, Rousseau’s Theory of Freedom, and Rousseau: A Guide for the Perplexed.
