Luther's Todd Green selected to participate in a seminar on interfaith understanding

Todd Green, Luther College assistant professor of religion, has been selected from a nationwide pool of nominees to participate in a faculty seminar on the teaching of interfaith understanding.

The seminar, offered by the Council of Independent Colleges and Interfaith Youth Core, is supported by the Henry Luce Foundation.

Twenty-five faculty members will participate in the five-day Teaching Interfaith Understanding Seminar Aug. 3-7 at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. The seminar will be led by Eboo Patel, founder and president of the IFYC, and Laurie Patton, dean of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and the Robert F. Durden Professor of Religion at Duke University.

"Green is a professor known on our campus for his ability to challenge students to think critically about important and difficult issues that confront our complex world," said Kevin Kraus, Luther vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, in his nomination of Green for the seminar. "I am confident that the experience he would gain from this seminar would greatly benefit his teaching and development of initiatives to further promote interfaith understanding on our campus.

The seminar will broaden faculty members' knowledge and strengthen their teaching of interfaith understanding, with the development of new courses and resources.

"Strengthening the teaching of interfaith understanding at colleges and universities is a high priority at a time when college enrollment is becoming more diverse – by religion as well as socioeconomic factors – just as American Society is becoming more diverse. Strengthening participation in American life with greater understanding of the distinctive contributions of different faiths is key to America's future success," said Richard Ekman, CIC president.

A national liberal arts college with an enrollment of 2,500, Luther offers an academic curriculum that leads to a bachelor of arts degree in more than 60 majors and pre-professional programs. For more information about Luther, visit the college's website: http://www.luther.edu.
