...fierce, feminine...sassy, funny and proud... This is dance to be experienced, both for its sheer physical force and the obvious dedication of the dancers. They are synchronized, strong, graceful and accomplished. — The Herald-Sun
For Urban Bush Women, creating dance and creating community are essentially linked. Founded in 1984 by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Urban Bush Women present in dance, movement, and words a bold and life-affirming work based on women's experiences, African American history and cultural influences of the African Diaspora. Dedicated to cultural expression as a catalyst for change, Zollar's works probe evocative and compassionate stories — from black women's concepts of beauty to civil rights in the rural South, and homelessness in New York.
