The Luther College Soccer Camp offers Iowa and the Midwest top-quality soccer instruction. The camp enables aspiring players to learn the basic techniques and tactics of the game in an atmosphere of positive encouragement and support, while advanced players receive collegiate/pro-level training. Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt. This camp is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 14.


Staff

[Chris Garcia-Prats]Chris Garcia-Prats, Luther College Head Men’s Soccer Coach

  • Entering 7th year as head coach.
  • Garcia-Prats has led Luther to a 42-13-7 overall record in the last three seasons including 2 Iowa Conference Championships, 2 NCAA National Tournament appearances, and 2 NSCAA top 25 National Rankings.
  • 2011 Iowa Conference Coach of the Year & NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year.
  • 2002 graduate of Trinity University.
  • Prior to Luther, he served as the assistant men's soccer coach and recruiting coordinator at Trinity University. During this stretch Trinity University made six NCAA Tournament appearances and three semifinal appearances, winning the national championship in 2003, and finishing second in 2007.

[Russ Schouweiler]Russ Schouweiler,  Luther College Head Women’s Soccer Coach

  • Entering 5th Year as Head Coach.
  • 2013 Iowa Conference Coach of the Year.
  • 2005 Graduate of Luther College.
  • Four-year letter winner while at Luther who played on two conference championship and two national tournament teams, including an Elite 8 appearance in 2001.
  • Took over Norse program after two years as an assistant women's coach at Macalester College.
  • Prior to his duties at Macalester, he was the girls head coach at Simley High School from 2005-08, where his teams were consistently ranked in the top-10 in Class 3A and 4A.
  • He is has also been a senior coach for the St. Croix Soccer Club since 2002, the last four as the head girls coach, reaching the State Cup Finals in 2007 and 2009 and the semifinals in 2008 as well as three straight indoor league championships from 2007-09.
  • From 2004-05 he was the Decorah High School head boys coach and led the Vikings to a 15-5 record and a fourth place finish at the state tournament.

[Julie Shockey]Julie Shockey, Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach

  • 2000 Graduate of Luther College.
  • Begins 12th year as an assistant coach.
  • Four-year letter winner for the Norse.
  • Also serves as the Public Information Office assistant.
  • For the past seven seasons has been the Head Coach of the Decorah Vikings girls soccer team.

[Christina Soward]Christina Soward, Assistant Women's Soccer Coach

  • Begins 5th year as assistant coach.
  • 2009 graduate of Luther College - Athletic Training Major.
  • Four-year letter winner for the Norse.
  • Played in 42 matches during her career.
  • Ranks sixth on Luther's all-time career list with a goals-against-average of 1.44.

Additional camp staff will be composed of college and Olympic Development coaches along with collegiate/professional players. Goalkeeping coaches will also be on site for individual training

Description of Daily Sessions

Session 1 Technical (9:30-11:30 a.m.)

Speed and agility exercises, circuit training designed to improve all aspects of their technical game: shooting, passing and receiving, heading, dribbling, Coerver moves, defending. There will be a progression as the week goes on to build on the previous day. Each session will conclude with a competitive themed game.

Session 2 Tactical & Games (2:30-4:00 p.m.)

Sessions on small group defending, combination play in the attacking third, zonal defending, positional awareness, and other functional training sessions. There will be specific functional sessions depending on the level of play of YOUR team. Each session will conclude with a small-sided game incorporating the tactical objective.


Luther College Sports Facilities

Regents Center indoor facilities include six tennis courts; a six-lane, 200-meter track; six full-sized basketball courts; 25-yard, eight-lane swimming pool; locker, training, and equipment rooms. The Legends Fitness for Life Center offers a strength and fitness facility with its own climbing wall. The outdoor facilities include 12 tennis courts, a cross country race course, fitness trails, and an all-weather track, which was installed in the fall of 2009.
